TAS Case Study Overview
Tata Administrative Services (TAS) was conceived by J. R. D. Tata in 1957 with the vision of identifying and grooming exceptional young leaders for the Tata Group. TAS candidates are evaluated through a distinctive selection process that includes case studies and group discussions, designed to assess analytical thinking, leadership judgment, and value alignment.
TAS Case Study Guidelines
Candidates are expected to follow these instructions while preparing and presenting their case:
-
Analyze the case strictly within the given timeline
Do not apply present-day assumptions or hindsight. All analysis must align with the period mentioned in the case. -
Use external data carefully
External data may be used to support assumptions, but it must be relevant to the same timeline as the case. -
Challenge incorrect data if required
If you believe certain data points are inaccurate, clearly state this at the start of your presentation and explain why. This will influence assumptions and conclusions. -
Identify issues independently
The problem statements are not predefined. You are expected to identify key issues based on your understanding of the case. The objective is to evaluate your thought process. -
Presentation format and time limit
The shared presentation format is only a guiding tool. You will get 20 minutes to present, so structure your content accordingly. -
Be prepared beyond the case
Questions may extend beyond the case study and can include topics such as Tata values, ethics, and leadership philosophy.
Sample Case Study Topics
Case studies typically focus on real-world managerial and ethical dilemmas. Examples include:
-
Managing a high-performing employee who has strong influence with senior leadership but creates interpersonal issues within the team.
-
Resolving conflicts between vegetarian and non-vegetarian employees in a shared workplace facility.
-
Handling discipline and performance issues between senior employees and fresh recruits.
-
Balancing dealer margins and company profitability while finalizing distribution partners.
